For my Mission X project, I decided to do a review blog. When I want to see a movie, read a book, or watch a show, I usually like to look up reviews for it to see if it’s good or not. I often come across a problem: when I find reviews, they are either one of two things. Either it’s a full-length essay with words over nine syllables, or it sounds like a three-year old chewed on the keys of a Blackberry. I decided that I had to fix this. Thus, Vandaviews was born.
In Vandaviews, I do my best to make reviews personal, entertaining, and easy to understand at the same time.
For the past eight weeks, I’ve been working on the technique of blogging to an audience. I discovered that the best way of writing a review that makes the reader feel engaged and interested in what I was saying was to type in the way that I speak.
This wasn’t easy because I probably don’t speak grammatically correct 100% of the time, but I eventually found my voice. With the help of a few friends, I learned a new way of typing, or “talking,” to people through blog posts without it being impersonal or awkward, and keeping it interesting while saying what I have to say.
I’m really glad that I chose a blog as my Mission X project, and I think it’s a skill I’ll be able to use later in life. I actually enjoyed it so much that I might continue a blog as a hobby over the summer. Whether I keep the review blog or start a different one, my Mission X project exposed me to a whole new side of the internet that I will definitely pursue.

The one thing I definitely think all bloggers should pay attention to is that while it’s nice to type for hours and monologue to yourself, remember the audience. Ask a friend or family member to read it and ask their opinion. Did they enjoy reading it? Was it engaging? As a blogger, you need to find your own balance between saying what you think and being entertaining.
