MISSIONX  SUMMARY Mitch Porter

During Mission X, I decided to do a short film. I was originally going to do a scripted reality-show series, but as I wrote the first script, I decided to make my first episode longer and make a short film.

The plot line for the film was based on Hadley’s pineapple addiction in February and March, but it was fun to go really overboard with it.

To write the script, I used a software called Movie Draft, and to edit, I used iMovie. I had to learn to use the software and add in each part of the movie in the correct format. I lost the script several times and had to rewrite because I didn’t back up my drafts, and my computer had to shut down a few times. The last scene was not finished until Week 5, even though we had already started filming, because it had always been more of a concept than the actual thing.

The first scene was easy to shoot because Dina, Hadley, and Ariana just read the lines from their computers. Some of them still forgot a few lines, and I had to improvise with the editing. But it was a fairly easy scene to shoot.

We had to stay after school for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th scenes. The 2nd and 3rd scenes were the easiest to shoot. Ariana and Hadley memorized their scenes and performed it perfectly for the camera, but we also took advantage of Hadley’s sunglasses by holding the script just below the camera’s view so she could glance down without anyone noticing.

The 4th scene was shot two different days and went very well. The girls did great. Most of the props survived, and we didn’t really disturb any classes.

However, the air conditioner was blaring the entire time, and the aeronautics club also decided to rocket-launch baby potatoes the same day. So there were major audio issues, and we had to shoot another day. The next day went great, and the scene was put into iMovie.

The 5th scene was definitely the hardest. We took over an hour to film. The first 40 minutes were spent memorizing lines, which Hadley had never done before for the film, and it was an almost four-minute scene. We filmed the scene in small parts mainly because of interruptions from kids yelling and the flags being lowered. We had to rush through the end because Ariana had to leave early, but in the process, I accidently deleted one of the main parts of the scene.

In replacement, we decided to use puppets and fake voices. This part was added a few days later. I also used some extra footage and a few newly shot things to add some extras into the movie, including: prologue, theme song, commercials, bloopers, and disclaimers.

This project was super fun to do and was really fun to piece together. I am grateful for the opportunity for a project where we have so much freedom.

Always go back over your writing to add to it.
