Mary Harris

MISSION▪X  SUMMARY Mary Harris

The first week of Mission X was hardest for me. I couldn’t tell you why, but it was. I sat there bored for an hour, the first day of Camp. The next day I just doodled and let myself get carried away. I was tired of being bored, so I drew a dull and gray picture and named it “Boredom.” The third day, all my drawing abilities were pooped, so I started thinking, swimming around in my thick, gray sludge pool also known as, you guessed it, boredom. I looked at the empty page in front of me, waiting patiently for me to give it life.

White...square...not soft, so it has to be rough...White…square…rough…white…square, like a house...rough…hite and rough like concrete, no, stucco…stucco…house…stucco house. That’s all it took. I had imagined a square house made purely of white stucco. It might not have been realistic, but who cares? It was Mission X. It didn’t really matter. So this was the way I opened up my story. If you notice that when you read the first chapter, it begins with my main character describing the house I imagined.

You might be wondering why I didn’t draw it out. Well, that’s because: A) there are some things I just can’t draw, and a realistic house is one of those things; and B) I pictured the object in my mind, and the only way that I could get that picture on paper was to paint it with my words. Once I started writing, I couldn’t stop. I just knitted little ideas together until it started to work itself out. Tie this in here...cut this part out...weave that thought in but not that wording—it needs to flow—add a little sorrow here and a bit of drama there… and voila, it works.

After a while, I got bored with my story line, and in the end I killed a character (whoops!). It made my story lumpy and the story line tangled and twisted, overlapping in the wrong places (it’s called a story LINE for a reason). Anyway, I ended up pulling the death out of the beginning of the story and slowly, in bits and pieces, adding it back in towards the end. This also gave me the idea of having only a sample of the main character Masako’s “Before” life, just so the reader can feel her pain and understand her a little better. I took away her memory in the second chapter, her ”During” world, so I could add in bits of her life and eventually a character’s death (I know; I’m so evil) back in. I wanted the emotion to explode across the pages so the pain is obvious in a silent way.

After reading this, someone’s going to think I’m depressed, but I’m just telling you the ugly truth of it (we are our biggest critics). The actual story isn’t that bad. It’s just…intense.

So yeah, that’s my story. The end?

For now. : }

(*smiles mischievously*)

If you have an idea, WRITE IT OUT! I can’t stress it enough. When you keep an idea cooped up in your head, you get “inspiration constipation.”

I chose to do yoga the first week. I started by finding different yoga poses and learning how to do yoga. I experimented with this for the first week.

Then the next week I decided to film different yoga videos, like beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I also made stretch and warm-up videos. After filming for about two weeks, I felt a little bored, and I wanted to try some more stuff.

I decided to finish my goal of two yoga videos, and try something similar but new. I decided to keep the yoga videos but put them on a healthy-living website. Making the website was so much fun!

Along with my own projects, I also helped with two other projects. The first project I helped with was acting in Jack and Jesse’s game show. The second project I helped with was Mitch’s TV show. I really enjoyed this experience. Although it required staying after school a lot, it was well worth it! The more I got into the healthy-living website, the more it evolved. I began adding more and more.

Overall this project was a great experience. I learned a lot about myself and how I work.

Andrew Ayer

MISSION▪X  SUMMARY Andrew Ayer

I started out in camp with a lot of ideas. Cooking is my passion, so they were all cooking- and food-related. First it was a cooking show, then it was collaborative cooking with other people. And then I'd write a review, then it was a cookbook, and then I finally decided on writing one recipe a week (making it and then writing a review of it).

I started this, and I really enjoyed it. So I kept doing it for a while. I wound up doing this for three weeks, and before it went downhill, I made a butternut squash and pasta dish, asparagus ice cream, and an argentine stew called locro, which were all amazing.

After three weeks, though, it started getting hard to do because I couldn't always cook, so I couldn't write my reviews. So Mr. Barringer and I decided I had to change my project.

With my new project, I just wrote reviews about anything I ate, which worked out really well, and I could get them all done. But I didn't enjoy it, and I got really, really bored. So I changed it again.

This was my very last change. It was a total experiment. I had never done anything like it before. I decided to try doing creative lettering and artistically write different words. And I'm glad I switched because once I started, it felt pretty natural, and I wound up making a ton of work.

My biggest advice for the rising seventh graders would be not to focus on the end product. This held me back a lot during my project. Also, don't be afraid to change your project up a little because if you get bored, you won't produce good, quality work.

If My LIfe Was A Musical

If my life was a musical, these songs would be the songs of my life:

EARLY YEARS
Song: “Isn’t She Lovely”
Artist: Stevie Wonder
Reason: My mom used to sing this song to me.

Song: “In Summer”
Artist: Josh Gad
Reason: I was actually opposite as a small kid. I lived in southern California so therefore I hadn’t really seen snow before. Too bad Frozen didn’t come out when I was little. :P

Song: “Twist and Shout”
Artists: The Beatles
Reason: My dad basically owns any Beatles record ever. So I grew up listening to these kinds of songs. I remember attempting to dance to the song.

TEEN
Song: Shut Up and Dance With Me
Artist: Walk the Moon
Reason: The song is bright and cheery
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjdIJ5ZSpSkME

Song: Don’t Stop Me Now
Artists: Foxes/Queen
Reason: I love how the song was recorded by Queen in a slightly rock way. But then Foxes redid it and made it more Jazzy. Foxes also performed this song on Doctor Who.

Song:All About That Bass
Artist: Meghan Trainor
Reason: Reminds me to be myself and not be some totally plastic girly

WHAT I HOPE TO COME
Song: English Kids in America
Artist: Lower Than Atlantis
Reason: (I want to move to England.)

Song: Dear Future Husband
Artist: Meghan Trainor
Reason: When I fall in love the guy must listen to me and understand my priorities.

Song: I Would Walk 500 Miles
Artist: Kenny and the Scots
Reason: The song just is so cachy.

Song: Marukaite Chikyuu
Artist: Funimation
Reason: Olivia told me too.

X Fest 2015!

This was the first ever X Festival, a celebration of the activities, over the past 8 weeks, of 51 students in both 7th and 8th grades in Mr. B.'s LA classes. It was an amazing display of passionate creativity! And these displays are just the tip of the iceberg of what these students chose to accomplish this trimester. Please visitmx2015.blogspot.com to see the virtual festival as I upload all their work over the next few days. Congrats, Students!

1 Day Until X Festival!

These are eighth-grade students (in our last official LA class of the year) working to the wire on their displays for the X Festival. The stuffed fox has become our mascot of sorts. Those paper rings on the table are actually each student's 8-week tracker, which I pulled off the wall, sliced into ribbons, and stapled into crowns in order to mark each student's place at their display table tomorrow.

The X Festival is Almost Here!

The X Festival for Students
After 8 weeks, the X Festival is finally upon us. The festival will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, from 1:15 to 3:15 pm, inside and outside the Lodge. During these two hours, students will display their work for each other. I know parents have many events to attend at the end of the year, so this festival has been planned for students. Parents are welcome to stop by, of course, especially those who are already driving to Woodlawn to pick up their students at the end of the day. But I do not intend to oblige any parent to make an additional visit. In fact, that is why I created this website: a virtual X Festival to visit at your leisure. I will take photos at the event of every student with their displayed work, and I will provide an entry for all 52 students on this blog. The entries will have photos, summaries, and links to work.
